I have a copy of a marriage certificate for 1901 which provides the bride's father's name. However at the time of the marriage he was already dead. He was a seaman living probably in Itchen, Southampton Hampshire and was registered on the vessel "Solent" at 1881 census but I have no other information on him. Does anyone have any bright ideas on how to find more information on an individual with such little detail. I have loads of information on one of his daughters. Many thanks Ruth Touhey |

Have you tried putting his name into the 1881 census? |

Ruth, are you talking about Benjamin? There's a Benjamin Shirgold on the 1881 census born in 1843 in Southampton and who was an Able Bodied Seaman |
