I have found a marriage for two people (now there's a surprise!) in the June Qtr of 1903. But I can't find them on the 1901 Census. They should be living with their families or maybe lodging/working somewhere, probably in the East London or Essex area - but they don't seem to be anywhere- either of them! Oooo er!.. there seems to be a lot of people missing from the 1901, I've lost a whole family. Who i know are alive cos the daughter married in 1921 and had my Nan in 1923!!!! shelli

I thought I'd lost a couple in 1901. I found the bloke on a boat at the other end of the country and the wife and kids at home under a totally different name - transcription error! If you have any idea where either of them might have been living, try an address search.

Rosi, Did you get the marriage certificat? That should give you some more clues to search with, extra names of fathers and possibly addresses to look for. (and try searching using wildcard, 1901 is notorious for transcription errors)

My husband's grandfather, Joseph Seldon, is listed on the census as Joe Selburn. Took me ages to find him. Have you tried using wildcards or alternative spellings. Someone told me that the 1901 census was transcribed in India by people with little command of the English language, let alone the spellings of English names! Sue at Langley Vale Epsom Downs SRY

I too have lost more than one family on the 1901 census. There must be a black hole they are all disappearing into. I have tried every alternative spelling I can think of so I can only assume that whoever transcribed it really couldn't read or that I come from several very alcoholic families!

I too have several ancestors missing on 1901 census. It's always a possibility that they left the country!!

Thankyou everyone for your various suggestions re my missing peeps. I haven't yet got the cert. but am hoping it will give me a bit more to go on. The spelling variation is a strong possibility an at least one of the names - but I've lost both of them! Rosi Colchester ESS

I've had the same problem and I've been advised that it's possible they may have been away on business, serving in the forces, in an institution such as prison/hospital/boarding house. Also, with an illiterate family the enumerator would record the verbal responses which could lead to spelling inaccuracies. Sometimes children were hidden away as the family didn't want to face accusations of overcrowding! And so the list goes on.... It's very frustrating though! Good luck! Suzanne
