Genealogy Chat

I have a death certificate for someone I believe is a relative of mine dating from 1892. On this certificate it gives both the deceased man's address and the address of the next of kin. I would like to be able to look up these addresses in the 1891 census (I appreciate that the people may not live there at the time - but its only one year apart)...problem is I can't find either address in the street index or any reference to them on old and modern maps or online. I was hoping that someone may be able to help me out here. The first address is for Tottenham Cottage(s) Poplar, Middlesex (or London depending where you look!) The second is for Charter(possibly Chartres or Charles?) in Bromley-by-Bow. Has anyone heard of either of these? Thanks :-)

Hi there There is a web page/site called lost London addresses which tells you where these addresses were. The "T" page is still under construction but I found Charles st Bow which is no longer there with an A-Z ref page 64 6d hope that helps Chris

If you can actually get to the FRC in London to look up the census records they have a street index to locate the piece of film you need to search anyway, it isnt really relevant if the streets are there now, just where they were in 1891

Yes I've tried search engines etc and have been to the FRC...problem is I couldn't find the street in the index and I don't actually know where in Poplar Tottenham Cottages are/were. Christine - thanks I'll take a look at the website :-)

Rosemary thanks for looking...I had already come across the Totnes Cottages. Unfortunatly the person I believe to be my relative lived at no. 12 and it definetly says 'Tottenham' - although this could have been a typo or something before.

Are there London directories on the directories on line site? I dont know but that is a possiblity to see if you can find the streets refered to in a directory of the day, sometimes they even tell you where abouts they are roughtly.
