The site Freebmd is a good place to start. If you are lucky enough to find the marriage o birth etc you are looking for it gives you the gro reference number which makes it cheaper when sending for the certificate. It also gives you a link on how to send off for them. The england and wales 1881 census is free to search at familysearch.org. Susan

Try getting in touch with local register offices for your certificates. They are very helpful and only charge £7 each.

You will find quite a bit of information at http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/ The local Register Offices are usually quicker, cheaper and more helpful. Do a WWW search to see if they have a WWW site first. Some are starting to put their indexes online. Some have forms to complete online and print out. Some will even take a query by EMail and check before you send you order. When you are ready, send the order to the local office with as much information as you know. Most (all?) like a stamped addressed envelope. I usually send a cheque for "not to exceed £xxx.xx" so they complete for the number of certificates they have found. Often you will get the certificates back more or less by return of post. Martin
