Im having big trouble trying to locate my gtgtgrandmother in either of the census, i have her in 1901 but she is married by then, and i need to know who her parents, siblings were. If anyone could help i would be most grateful, or suggest a way this name could have been mistranscribed. Her name was Ellen Cialia Donovan, born 1872 in Peckham, from her marriage certificate i know her fathers name was John and he was a carpenter. Thankks in advance. |

Clare You say that Ellen was born in Peckham, but the marriage certificate only states where she was living at the time of her marriage not where she was born. Have a look on the family search 1881 census. There is an Ellen Donovan born 1872 born in Lambeth with a John V Donovan as father. Would you not be better off applying for her birth certificate? Margaret, I know she was born in Peckham from the 1901 census, ive looked at the original and its right. I would order the birth certificate but there are about 8 born in that area and time, i dont know who her mother was so if i get a certificate i dont whether it will be the right one. This is the only ancestor im having trouble with! Thanks. |

Clare Peckham isn't listed on the index on the 1891 census and as I don't know London at all I just put London on the search. There is a Ellen Donovan listed as being born at St Giles in the Fields in London, wherever that is, she is 21 and a Pickle Bottler living at 3 Wild Court, St Giles. also there is her widowed mother Mary age 40 a flower seller and brother Jeremiah age 19 a fishmonger, sister Mary age 16 a book folder and grandmother Ellen Neale age 73 a widow. There is another Ellen of the same age but she was born in Drury Lane, again with a widowed mother. I tried all ages from 16 -21, this was all I found. Margaret |

There is one in March 1873 quarter on freebmd but it doesn't quote the middle name. DONOVAN Ellen St. Olave 1d 278 St. Olave is S E London, not sure if it includes Peckham. HTH |

Thanks everyone. I think i have found her father age 51 born Grays, Essex living in Kensington in 1901. According to the marriage certificate he was a carpenter. The only other clue is one of the witnesses, Ettie Donovan, but ive put that name into loads of searches and come up with nothing. I'll keep trying, thanks again. |
