"Wrong" people living at the addresses!

I have ordered marriage certificates and have done searches for the addresses stated on the certificates, but the people living at the addresses are nothing to do with the people getting married! Can anyone explain this? I was expecting to find a household full of relatives but the people living there have completely different surnames. This has been the case for 3 addresses. I guess it could be the case that my married people were lodging but surely that wouldn't have been the case for the bride aswell - would it have been considered "proper" to have a young female lodging with strangers? Grateful for any help.

I have heard that females sometimes gave an address of a friend or relative to the church. This was usually because they did not live in that parish but wanted to be married in that church. Often the clergy would only marry people who lived in their parish.

You are right in what you say, that the person could have just moved on. However, one of the marriages took place on 21.12.1901. The address that shows up on the marriage certificate for the groom has a different family living there on the 1901 census but it seems strange that my bridegroom should move between the end of March and December in 1901 and then move again when he got married - I know they lived at the bride's address after marriage as that was the address given for the birth of the first child.

Sorry to add to your woes. Daughters often returned home to mother to have their first baby.

Andrea, I have had the same problem! I have written evidence (birth cert) that my great grand-father and his family lived at 12 Churchill Street Liverpool in January and February 1901 as the place of birth and address for registration are the same. However when i check the 1901 census it is a completely different family living in the house! I also checked the address they were living at 2 years later in 1903 and again it was a different family living there. I don't know where or how to trace im not can anyone HELP ME?
