Hi Kathleen, When it comes to the Celts, you'll, need to look more carefully, my family were Scots, and my Great,Great Granmother was 11 years old when she married, and 12 when she had her first child!! so, they may not have lied about their ages after-all!! If they are Irish, it would be worth checking out with WWW.irishgenealogy.com, not sure if they can help, but, you may find other people who have married young! Goodluck Kimmie |

Thanks for your help, Ros. I guess my ancestors must have been over 21 when they married, unless they lied about their age! I believe they came from Ireland, so it may have been difficult to get parents' consent, unless parents were dead. Kathy |

Does anyone know the age when consent of parents was not required for marriage in 1818 London? I have the marriage record of my ancestors who were married in Stepney, London in 1818 by banns. They previously had two children before their marriage and I have assumed that one or both were not old enough to marry at the time of their birth as they subsequently married and had four more. It might therefore help me guess at their ages as I still need to locate their birth/christening records. Was marriage by licence the same as it is today? |
