My ggrandmother, Emma, was married three times, the first time to someone called Mr Herbert (don't know his Christian name) then Mr Savage (my grandmothers father) then Mr Dowsett. On my grandmothers birth certificate it just lists her mothers name as 'formerly Herbert'. How can I find out any more about her? My Gran was born March 1892, Hilman Street, Fulham

Do you know of any children? If so, then you could try sending off for birth certificates to see if they have more details for you. Alternatively, do you know the date of her death? You could try sending off for a copy of the death certificate and hope that a member of the family (a husband of hers at the time) registered the death. The details of the person registering the death will be on the certificate, as will the address of your ggrandmother at the time of her death. You can then try an address search. Do you know the date of any of the marriages? If so, try looking on the census records for marriage details and obtain a certificate. If you know where your Gran lived at any time, I would suggest an address search as this gives the whole household. Hope this helps.

Hi Andrea, I've got my grans birth certificate but the address on it is proving a problem, because it might be just a lodging house. I don't know any dates, even approximate, for my great grans death, or where she might have been born (other than somewhere in London). (don't know her maiden name anyway, yet). I've had a bit of help with the marriage to,and the death of, her second husband, so perhaps if I get those certificates there might be more details on them. Thanks for you suggestions though.

Linda, Maybe someone could do a look up for you on the 1891 census, hopefully they got married a year to 2 ealier, you never know there could have been an older sibling, but at least you might get an age for Emma. Kim

A kind lady, Rosemary, has found out for me that William Savage married an Emily Herbert in Fulham Sept. 1891. and if so, she would have been 3 months pregnant with my gran. I think this is the right couple because although she called her daughter Emma on her birth certificate (like herslf) she was always known as Emily. The family names of the Emma H Herbert don't ring any bells, and I don't think she's the right one. However, Rosemary gave me another couple of leads, one a soldier, William Savage born in Norfolk (my Gran married a soldier from Norfolk and no-one ever knew how they might have met) and another William Savage who's father is called Frederick and my Gran called one of her sons Frederick William. I'm going to send off for the marriage certificate and get the names of the fathers, but if you can come up with anything else, I'd be really grateful.
