Brilliant!! Many thanks to all of you for your advice and pointers. Genes Connected is like a little community and it never ceases to astound me how everyone responds with a real willingness to help. I think I would be still stuck on my great grandfather if it wasn't for this site!! My apologies for not replying sooner but had the school run followed by Doctors. Thanks again. Helen

Try this website http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/trades.html It says this "CORDINER Originally a term used for a person who worked with Cordovan, a special soft leather from Spain. Later it became the term used for a shoemaker. CORDWAINER See CORDINER." Hope it helps Karen

Am I correct in thinking a cordswainer was a shoemaker or someone who worked with leather? I know I have seen this message posted here before but do you think I can find it?! Any advice would be gratefully received Best wishes helen
