Hi. Is anyone able to do lookups of the Kirkwall census for 1841, I am looking for a William Dearness, son of William Deaness born in Kirkwall in either 1823 or 1828. Thanks

Rachel

Hi Pamela I've found a William Dearness born 1823 to William Dearness (father) and Ann Fairweather (mothers maiden name) reg in Kirkwall Parish records. GROS 021/00 0006. Couldn't find any census info for you, found that from Scotlandspeople.gov.uk. If you need any further lookups, i've still got some credits left on that web site that i can't use. Rachel

Rachel, Thanks for looking that up, I dont think I had that ref(but I do have a MI for William and Ann from Kirkwall with their death dates and thus approx dob) I am trying to link back my ancestor William Dearness with that 1823 William, (and make sure there isnt an 1828 one) I know the William son of William and Ann isnt in Kirkwall in the 1851 census, which I got from an online transcript I think from a link through OFH soc (mine married in England in 1846) and wanted to check if he was there in 1841 or not, he was a sailor and at 18 could have been at sea anyway, and escaped the census but an 1828 one would be only 13, and probably still there. If you can think of any lookups which would sort that out I would be very grateful Pam

Pam The search i did was from 1823 to 1854 and found 3 births for William Dearness, 1823, 1827, 1836. The only one with a father whose name was William was the 1823 one. The others were John (mother Jane Muir)and James (mother Sarah Muir) respectively. Can't think of other lookups on the net just yet about the sailing thing but will let you know if any come to mind.
