Hi I have the following family in my tree: 1881 census- 4 Barlow Street Census Place: Darlington, Durham, England Source: FHL Film 1342176 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4888 Folio 75 Page 9 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Robert W. DAWES M 43 M Coggeshall, Essex, England Rel: Head Occ: Manager For A Broker & Commission Agent Catharine DAWES M 53 F Alston, Cumberland, England Rel: Wife Elizabeth DAWES U 18 F Bristol, Gloucester, England Rel: Daur Occ: Shopkeeper Drapery Sophia DAWES U 16 F Porterhead, Somerset, England Rel: Daur Occ: Packer Drapery Henry DAWES U 15 M Porterhead, Somerset, England Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Errand Boy Robert W. DAWES U 12 M Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Walter DAWES U 10 M Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Isabell DAWES U 7 F Darlington, Durham, England Rel: (Daur) Occ: Scholar The area they lived in was a well off area as the people occupying surrounding houses were accountants, surgeons etc. There were several private boarding schools nearby. Is it likely my ancestors children were day pupils? or is it more likely they attended a state school? If so how do you go about working out what school they attended? Their nearest church appears to be Holy Trinity Church. Any advice gratefully received. George |
