Laurie, Both the boys appear on the 1881 census (one at boarding school, the other at home) and one only appears at home on the 1901. Can't find the other on the 1901. May have passed on. What is bugging my cousin and myself is that NEITHER of us can find EITHER of the boys on any index as being born. We have tried all variants of BROOKES and BROOKE and come up with zilch! There were 4 brothers and the other two were born in India/Sth Africa. These two were born in England, one in Chatham Kent and the the other in Aldershot. There isn't any relative who knew them still with us to ask anything, unfortunately. We will just have to keep on looking! SOnja |

Hi, I have had the same problem with my nan, although she was born too late for the 1901 census. I was lucky after a lot of asking within the family etc I have now received the relevant details to get her birth cert. She was registered in her mothers name. Do you have the details of where she was born? Laurie |

I take it you were checking the 1837 site and not another for the births? Is it pssible they were born with a different surname - maybe the mothers? Graham |

Does anyone have any suggestions on where next to look for an elusive gf and his brother? I know they were born and existed as one was married in 1917 (Have the cert) and the other, as they both do, appears on both 1881 and 1901 census! I have searched the index three years forward and three years prior to their approximate dates of births! (Now cross eyed!!) Is it usual for BOTH to be missed on indexes, especially as they were 3 years apart? Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Sonja |
