Tina you start with yourself, then your parents, then your grandparents, chat up your relatives and put as much info as you can down on paper, gather as many certificates or copies of them that you can from your rellies and then you can work out who and where to look next if you have any queries post them on here or the guest book and you are sure to get an answer hevi |

Hi Tina I would agree exactly with everything that Heather has said already. You may also find the websites useful, listed in the "links" section on the left hand side of this page. The following are the main ones that I use. The 1901 census allows you to look for relatives by name, and also by address. You then have to pay to view the detailed record. You can download a free tool from wwwdotcensusdecoderdotcom which allows you to do more analysis on this data without having to pay quite so often! The Latter Day saints site is invaluable, although not always accurate(you need to validate data from here). It contains a full free & searchable transcription of the 1881 census , plus International Genealogical index(known as IGI) which gives lots of parish data. Read the hekp texts on this site to give lots of tips on searching on this site to get the most out of it. FreeBMD is a site that aims to offer free data on Births deaths and marriages, to enable you to get the "GRO reference" which will allow you to send for certificates of your relatives. This is so far incomplete and is updated frequently. It is transcribed by unpaid volunteers and more are needed if you ever get any free time!!! 1837online offers the same as above, but is complete , but you have to pay for your searches.(certificates are only available from 1837 onwards). I think if I were to give you one tip, it would be to cross check everything where possible, never take anything on face value, even if from official sources!!! Good luck - I hope you have as much fun from this as I do, and you will find the people here are wonderfully supportive , helpful (and patient!)and will always be ready with an idea if you get stuck. Best Regards Maxine |
