Thanks Maxine! I tried the EllisIsland site earlier after reading one of your earlier posts but it didn't cover the dates I was looking at. I'll certainly give the 1871 census a go. Thanks again for your help. Sam |

Hi Samantha You could perhaps try a request for someone to look at the 1871 census for you to see where they were then. It is possible they emigrated (try the ellis island site for passenger lists), as my great grandparents emigrated , and my Nan was born in Ohio, but the family returned here around 1901 after my great grandfather died of typhus. It may be something like this that brought them back - they might not have suffered as a resultn of disease, but may have left if things were not successful for them, or they just didn't like it for one reason or another. (Have you seen Gangs of New York yet?!!!) It is unlikely it was business if the whole family went - anyway that would be indicated by the professions on the 1881 census. Regards Maxine |

Hi! I have a relative Sarah J Butler who was born in New York (but a British Citizen) in 1861. Her parents were George Butler born in 1831 in Derby and Mary (surname unknown) born in 1827 in Woodhouse, Leicester. By 1881 they were all back in Derby. What were they both doing in New York in 1861? When did they go and come back. Any ideas what to try next as this is intriguing me! Thanks! Sam |
