Thanks Margaret. What I understood was that St. Georges Hanover Square Workhouse was opened in 1726 and closed in 1886. By then it was part of the St georges Union. I have been unable to find my portering ancestor in the censuses so have been looking around the poor houses instead because they are seperate listings. Unfortunately there are a lot of them and you need to know the address to search and I can't download the 1901 viewer for whatever reason. Roger |

Roger St George, Hanover Square is a registration district and parish. I have ancestors born in that area. It is the area around Hyde Park, Upper Brook Street and surrounding district of Mayfair. 1a on the GRO indexes. Margaret |

Hi George and Crista. I would like to think this is the case but the only person I can find on BMD etc who could have been this portering person was born in St Georges Hanover Square which I later found (with help from this site) to be A work house itself. |

Hi Roger, Just a guess, but maybe he was a porter at a workhouse. If so, his job would have been to maintain a secure entrance to the Workhouse and record all entering and leaving. Crista |

It could mean that he was a porter at the Union Workhouse, meaning he took the belongings of those poor people. George |
