Could I aks for everyone's considered opinion please - my grandmother died in 1932, aged 43. She married in 1915 aged 26 and gave her father's name as John King (deceased). I cannot find a Frances King (my grannie) whose birth year (give or take a few years for the porkies that were told in those days) ties up with her father's name. I can find other Frances Kings who tie up age wise, but not father's name wise - which route should I travel without sending for birth certs. for everyone in the category? any ideas much appreciated. Hi, Do you know where she was born. That will help tie things down to the right one. Janet |

Thanks Janet and Deborah - should have mentioned that Frances King's father (John) was down as Lace Maker - so I assume that the family were Nottingham based (that's what we are famous for here in Nottingham). both Frances Kings in Nottingham in 1901 had fathers called Charles (one Frances being too young and one being a possible, but wrong dad's name) - the only Frances King born in Nottingham with the right age and a dad called John has his occupation as Engine Driver and they lived in Derbyshire in 1901. I do not think an engine driver would have become a lace maker - do you? Very fishy family we have, and getting fishier! I might have to bite the bullet and send for certs. but that will only confirm the information I already know - still wont confirm which one is mine! hey ho, will keep plodding on. Any suggestions where I might look next? Jacqui |

That's a toughie. Is there any chance that John King could be her stepfather? If she were illegitimate or her birth father died when she was very young, maybe she regarded John King as her real dad. It's the only explanation I can think of right now. |
