I have hit the "brickwall" that comes to almost all of us at one stage. My great, great grandparents are on the 1881 census as living in Lawford, Essex, with children. However, am unable to find a birth cert/or marriage cert for either (unless I am being totally thick)!! John Salmon born c1844 in Polstead, Maria Joslin born c 1849 in Hadleigh. They had at least 6 children born from 1871 - 1880. Mary Eadie Salmon one of their daughters (my great grandma)born 1874 in Raydon and died 1n 1947 in Dovercourt. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for taking time to read this. Liz |

Elizabeth Where have you looked? If it is Freebmd it isn't complete. You could try your library. They should have fiche for the BMD and you can look for free. Margaret |

Liz, There's this on FreeBMD. Births Dec 1845 Joslin Maria Cosford 12 309 It wasn't uncommon for the women lie about their ages. Cosford includes Hadleigh. Crista |

Liz, Did John remarry? On the 1901 census he's married to Jane from Hadleigh. Crista |

Thanks for replying. I've looked on Freebmd - and realise that it is not complete and came up with date of 1845 - but would it be her? Have also trawled though the BMD at the FRO and have come up against the "Brickwall" there. I am not aware that John married again - but he might have done - wont discount anything. Liz |

Liz, Either he remarried or Maria and Jane were the same person. Crista |

Hi Crista, Who said family research was easy??!! Did you happen to onte Jane's surname at all? Have not signed up for the 1901 census yet. Spoke to my Mum earlier, andshe canot temember any talk of aany other marriage - but that could be one of those no no's in the days when that talk was done out of the ears of children. Thanks for your time. Much appreciated Liz |

Elizabeth, Jane was listed as Jane Salmon. You know, you don't need to sign up to use the 1901 census. If you download the Census Decoder at www.censusdecoder(.)com you can group households together. Crista |

Hi Crista I have just been having a laugh at myself!! I am having a "thicko" day - of course Jane's surname would be Salmon - as they were married. Did not know about the decoder - will certainly give it a go. Thanks very much - appreciated. Hope my brainn doesn't give upon me again.!! Regards Liz |
