My grandfather William Mace served with the army during WW1, from the information i know from family it seems like he desertered at some point and changed his name to Barton. Not much is known as both he and my gran were very secretive and private over details. Does anybody know of any sites to chase this up on?...been trying for a while without any luck whatsoever...Many thanks |

Hello Demelza Try http://www(.)mlfhs(.)org(.)uk/infobase/library(.)CDshtm Its the Manchester Library data available on library computers. It has data from all over the country not just Manchester. including WW1 records and deserters. And you could also try http://www(.)aftermathww1(.)com/desmemorial(.)asp Hope this helps. Shirley |

One of my uncle's was a member of the firing squad who shot deserters,,Apparantly a firing squad consisted of 6 soldiers, but only one had a live bullet,,the rest had blanks. I can only think that he must been ordered to do this as nobody could want to undertake this horrible task by choice, |
