Thanks Patsy, but if he was illegitimate then he wouldn't have his fathers name (thrift was listed as McKay on Gabriels marriage cert). Even if Gabriel was illegitiate there should be a birth/marriage/death or census record for a Thrift McKay somewhere but there isn't! If he really wasn't a McKay then I have no idea what to do next! Thanks, -Kat

Kat, Maybe Gabriel's birth was registered under another name? Could he have been illegitimate? I suggest this as I was unable to find my husband's ggrandmother and it turned out she was registered under her mother's surname, then adopted her grandmother's maiden name. Scottish death certificates from the early 1900s stated whether you were born illegitimate, don't know if English ones did? Good luck Patsy

Jaqueline - Yes, I tried every variation of MCKAY (going back to the origins of the surname and all known derivitives) but nothing. I sent off the details to the records office in Scotland and they did not find anything either. Best Wishes, -Kat

My great great great grandfather was: Gabriel McKay - born c1826 According to his son's marriage certificate GABRIEL was a Chief Gunner in the RMA. So I looked on the 1881 census for England (where the family were at this time) and there is only one GABRIEL MCKAY here. He is the correct age, living in Southsea, Hants and is a Gunner in the RMA. It states his birthplace as 'scotland' I ordered Gabriel's marriage cert and it says that his fathers name was THRIFT MCKAY. Here the trail goes stone cold. I cannot find THRIFT or GABRIEL anywhere else. Any ideas? Thank you for trying to help me! -Kat

Hi Kat, Can you give a bit more detail? I'm sure someone will be able to give you advise if you give a bit more information. I do have the 1881 Census for Scotland and can have a look at that for you. Regards Margaret
