Carol, I will post a message next time I intend to visit Gateshead library. They have such a good index system of the 1851 Census, I am sure it wont take me long to do a dozen look ups for people. Paul |

Hi Paul, My Mum's family are from Gateshead and I would like to visit the Central Library, but as I have no transport it would take approx 3 hrs from where I live to get there on the bus. I know I'm being cheeky, but I was wondering if you would mind looking up my ancestors for me? I will be very grateful if you could. Thanks, Carol. |

Hello Paul, Thank you for the information. I will try and get there. I live about three quarters of an hour away from there, that is by buses. My parents came from Gateshead and also some of my ancestors. Might be some interesting finds. I haven't used the library yet, as when I started researching a few months ago, I went and they told me, quite rightly to go and find some more information first. This was Newcastle on Tyne library. Will have another go now Regards May |

I've just got back from the Central Library at Gateshead. They have indexed the 1851 Census by surname, and photocopied every page into books. It made finding my ancestors very easy. And the staff were amazingly helpful. So if you have ancestors from Gateshead, then it's well worth a visit. And can I recommend a trip to the Quayside too - the Bridge, the Baltic and the giant Music Centre they are building on the south bank make for a great day out. Paul |
