In more modern times "clicking" is undertaken using a clicking press. This consists of a flat table over which a similar sized table closes down on the lower one. Sheets of leather are placed on the lower table. On top of the leather are placed "knives". These knives consist of metal shapes made into patterns, for say shoes or belts, (a bit like pastry cutters are used for cutting pastry to make tarts and pies). The press is operated squeezing the knives through the leather. When the press is released again the leather shapes are removed. They then go on to be put together in the next part of the process. This is "clicking". John |

A boot clicker was (and still is)a person who cut out the uppers from a pattern with a hand knife. The name 'clicker' comes from the clicking noise made by the knife as it passed over the metal pattern. Charles |
