I've just stumbled on a great website which I think will be of great interest to all of us try to add flesh to the bones of our research - http://www(.)victorianweb(.)org/ I was thinking of investing in some books but there is enough there to keep me busy for days!!

Just found this one too. More specific to London but from my initial browsing looks like there might be some useful stuff similar to what you find in the trade directories and also longer articles - http://www(.)victorianlondon(.)org/
