A thread of 82 is just too much! The latest rant from Bri/Leeds/Liverpool was most insulting....doesn't he see how may people Clare helps on this board! Clare had a very valid point and was entitled to express her opinion. I am DELIGHTED to help anyone who has tried to find someone and is looking for a Tip, another opinion or a lookup, that's what this board if for....but you do get the impression that some people discover a new name in the family tree and immediately get on the GC board for someone else to do the research for them. Where is the joy of discovery in that? I have noticed that Clare continues to help where she can and I just wish that others would just shut up. Sue |

Sue Totally agree, you supported me when I made a comment on similar lines a few months back. We all need help at some time but sometimes , well I won't say anymore. Margaret |

Without wishing to go on and on and on.... I do wish that people would stop telling other people how to research. I get as much pleasure when I find a family member as when someone else finds it.I have not got the time to research daily. I come from a very large family and without help would not be as far as I am. If others want to do it all themselves fine do it, but PLEASE stop telling others how much joy they should feel when they discover their family themselves. we are all individual and do our research the way we want to. If you don't like seeing the look ups don't read them. Lynda |

I can certainly understand where Clare is coming from. Before she made the post in question, I had thoughts along the same line, but as I new to the board felt I had no business saying anything as I have asked for and received help and am still feeling my way along and don't want to abuse the kindness of others. I have also tried to respond to others asking for help, as I know sometimes you cannot see the forest for the trees and someone with a fresh "brain" can make a suggestion! When someone has suggested another avenue to look at something - the light goes on and I think how could I have not thought of doing that! That aside, perhaps when people are requesting help or looks up - maybe they could also include exactly what they've done to date to try and find the information - just a suggestion - pls don't take my head off! Often there are other sources where you can find information besides a census, or at least come up with some leads. Penny |

Lynda If you get as much pleasure when someone else finds a member a your family, do you take that info as gospel? Don't you check anything that you haven't found yourself? How do you know that you have been given the correct info? One error can send your research in totally the wrong direction. We are constantly being told not to take the IGI as gospel and to check original records, what is the difference in this case? Margaret |

Penny you are so right. That is the spirit of a help board and there are lots of willing helpers here on GC. Sometimes you have to stop yourself giving too much information that you find easily through experience because you don't want to deny the requesters the thrill of actually finding it themselves. I will certainly give it if it is clear that they really don't know how to go about it. Please don't think I am saying you can't ask for lookups....we all ask at sometime and I'm about to get the 1861 for Lancs and will be pleased to do them. Sue |

Margaret. When someone is kind enough to give me information that I have not got, I look at what it is, and then see if it fits, just like I do if I find the information myself. I then make up my own mind on what to do with it.If others don't want to work like this fine, but please it is up to individuals to do what they want with the information we do not all work the same, thankfully.
