I found a gt uncle in 1881 with wife and 6 children, including one George aged 5. Gt. uncle was a gardener. In 1891, I found gt. uncle as a servant/gardener, shown as M, with son George 15, garden boy, visitor. I then found his wife Anne as M, Head, Laundress, with 3 of the children and 2 grandchildren. One of the children is George. So was George shown on the census twice, or are there two gardeners of the same name, age and place of birth? Jan. |

Could it be that young George was visiting his father when the enumerator arrived and once the enum had gone or while he was there George left to go home. An census person then arrived at other house and so unintentionally George was recorded twice. George |

That is what I was wondering - it seems too much of a coincidence that they are both listed as Married but without a partner there, and that she is shown as the Head. I'll keep looking to see if there is another gardener who could be the husband, but I've already checked three times. Jan. |

I have a gt gt aunt who is listed twice in 1881, once with her parents and once with her elder married sister. I don't think it's that rare an occurence |

Thanks Rosemary, I really do think that must have happened in this case too. Jan. |
