I must admit I did wonder if the word mental came in there somewhere. That would explain my life and I can blame the ancestors!

Jan I have a Kezia Manns as nurse at 42 Western Rd convalesent Home St Mary Magdalen Hastings (It sounds Catholic) So if you type Kezia's name in on family search. org, 1849 that will come up. Also patients names from all over the country Joan

Had a look in my 'little book' only thing that I can find that has any similarity is ......Sister of Mercy..A nun belonging to a religious order. Could she have been a nursing nun? Anne

I found this entry on a UK History of Nursing website: What is an 'SMS'nurse in the 1881 census? SMS or 'Subsidiary Medical Services' is a technical term used by the census office personnel employed to classify occupational groups in the 1881 census. The person referred to may have no training or formal qualification and may simply use the term 'nurse' by custom and practice. This may or may not be the same as SM!! Alison

Which convalescent home was that? I live in St. Leonards, which is next door to Hastings. I wonder if the SM meant something like Six Monthly - where the nurse looks afer a new baby for the first six months until the nanny takes over. Jan.

Hi I have a Domestic Nurse as a relative and she worked in a convalesant Home in Hastings on the 1881 Census probably like a Auxilary Nurse Joan

For the occupation of one of my relatives I have Domestic Nurse (SM). Does anyone know what SM means?
