Louise you start at the beginning and work backwards. Go with what you know. If you know your grandparents names, then get their wedding certificate. This will give you their ages when they married and their fathers names so then you should be able to get their birth certificates which will give you both their parents names. If you use the freebdm site, or 1837 online or the St Catherine house records at your library, you will get a feel for all the people who had those names and where they came from. Have you been to a family research centre at the Church of the Latter Day Saints? They have loads of resources not to mention nice people to help you out. Sorry if this was not what you meant

just thought I'd put this back to the top.I don't like to see messages with no replies. You could put a message on the trying to find board. It really depends on what you want to do. If you are doing a family tree you should start with any info you know and then work back. You can always put specific questions on this board. Once you start it gets easier.

am new to family history and am looking for any northmores/ratcliffs who lived or was related to someone living in plymouth or devon with those 2 surnames i really dont know where to start loking this is harder than i thought!
