A lady has e-mailed me today in connection with our shared interest in the surname "Humphrey". She lives in Canada and is trying to trace George Henry Humphrey, born around 1843 and she thinks from Lancashire. She has tried freebmd and is thoroughly fed up as she does not seem to be making any progress - especially as she is abroad! If some kind soul could throw some light on her problem, it may tempt her into becoming a member! Would love to e-mail her some good news! Best wishes Helen Berkshire |

Helen My maternal Grandmother was Alice Humphreys and her father was John Michael Humphreys on his marriage cert and the 1901 census. However, on his birth cert his name is Michael Humphrey and his father is Patrick Humphrey. John (Michael) was born in Manchester, Lancashire and his Patrick was from Ireland. If you email me with the details I may be able to check if there is a connection with your lady in Canada. Lynne |

Helen PS: I have nearly 300 credits on 1837 so if she knows the year I will do a lookup for her. Lynne |

Dear All Thank you very much for all your advice and help. Apparently, George emigrated to Canada in 1875 with his wife. Dawn (lady in Canada) has a problem with his wifes' maiden name as it is listed as Henley on the first childs' birth certificate and Emery on the second one!! She believes the first name to be Elizabeth or Emily. She has found a site which lists the cemetery stones and inscription for George and was able to calculate his DoB from that, estimating it at 1843. I'm afraid that is all she has to go on. Any suggestions?! Helen |

Hi Helen, The 1881 Canadian Census lists only 1 George Humphrey born in England. He is aged 30 and living with his wife Ellen(23) and son William S(1) at Oxford East, Oxford South, Ontario. Ellen was also from England, William born in Ontario. Any use? Dave |

Hi David Thank you very much for the look up - will pass info onto Dawn but their first child, Ada, was born in 1875, a month after they emigrated. Do not know what second child was called - will have to ask her and post answer! Many thanks again for taking the time and the trouble. Best wishes Helen :) |
