What I was trying to say in my previous message was that great uncle Arthur was only ever known as Arthur, and everyone in the family swore that was his name. Nobody could find reference to his birth. Then one of my cousins somehow discovered he had been registered as Walter - a name which no-one in the family had heard before. So do be very careful about "family memory", because it isn't always right. Jan. |

thanks everyone for your help. im still confused as im new to all of this. thomas & mabel were my great grandparents. i only found their existance the other day which was confirmed by a cousin. so i know that their names are correct also the childrens were too, my grandad was born later in 1908.(also charles alfred!!) probably the only way to find their marriage details will to look on 1837. if their eldest son was born c1897 then i'll go back every year from that. that may work. sorry im thinking out loud!! elaine x |

Don't worry too much about names changing. My grandfather, christened Charles Alfred, is shown as Charles in the 1881 and Alfred in the 1891. His brother, christened Walter, is shown throughout as Arthur. So far as area of birth is concerned, the place where they were born is often a different name from the Registration district, so they put their version on the census, but the "official" version is on BMD and 1837. I've found a Thomas Horton age 15 born in Tottenham on 1881 census which makes him born about 1866 - not an unreasonable margin of error. Not found him on FreeBMD though or their marriage. There is, however, a Jonathan Thomas Horton marrying a Mabel Collins in SepQ 1896 in Edmonton district (which includes Tottenham). Also found Mabel Collins b DecQ 1872 in Edmonton which would make her the right age. Could that be the right one? Presumably on 1901 you have also found their 2 children Thomas age 4 and Harry age 1 both born in Tottenham. There is a Thomas George Horton on FreeBMD born MarQ 1897 and a Harry Garnet Horton born SepQ 1899, both in Edmonton district. Hope that helps. Sue |

i cant find the marriage of thomas horton c1869 & mabel c1873. or any birth records for them. on the 1901 census it states that they were both born in tottenham middlesex, however i did a look up on the LDS site & i found a thomas horton living with his family, same birthdate but listed as being born in kilburn middlesex. im really confused! elaine x |
