Hi Jan, The Standing's I have are Francis Standing born c1849, Hastings wife Annie Standing born c1851 step daurs Florence & Ethel Constant. Address 22 East Street Charlton Greenwich The above is off the 1901 According to 1891 they lived at 22 Park Street Forest Hill Charlton Florence was not living with them instead her older brother who is written down as 'step son' Charles was and Ethel was also there. So too was Francis' brother Thomas born c1863 in Hastings. On 1891 it reads Flauding for the surname of Francis & Annie though I'm 99% sure it should say Standing. Laurie |

Woolwich is the registration district for Plumstead. Can you tell me more about your Standings, as I'm looking for some in that part of the world. My gt grandmother was Sarah Maria Standing, she married William Godfrey Foster. Jan. |

Hi Andrew, At the time of the 1881 census the family were living in Woolwich, this was before Ethel was born. I do think that this Ethel and Florence are from the right family. Laurie |

Hi Andrew, This is really strange because on 1901 Ethel is living with Florence and they are both classed as step daughters!! But the rest of the family seem to have disappeared. They had an older sister called Julia but she was married by 1901 and I am yet to find the name of the person she married. I found 2 possibles on FreeBMD but they don't appear on 1901 either. I'm wondering whether the Standing family were relatives and that they took the children in after their mother died. The father had died by 1881, so that also asks the question who is Ethels mother? She's too old to be Florence's. This family is the hardest I've had yet. Laurie |

Ah, sorry this Ethel Constant is born in Woolwich not Plumstead, so it looks as if it isn't the same person as Florence. |

Hi Laurie, Been having a look on the 1901 census but likewise, haven't been getting anywhere fast. I had a look back at the 1891 census to get some ideas and spotted a Charles C Constant living with the Standing family, whom you mention. There's no sign of a Florence but there is an Ethel Constant, who seems to be of the same age, thereabouts. Could this be the same person, Ethel perhaps her middle name? :-/ Andy. |

Hi, I have managed to find a Florence Constant, the only thing is it says that she is Step Daughter and her parents names are Francis Standing and Annie Standing?? What other meaning could step daughter be used. I'm sure it is the one as the age and place of birth are correct. Laurie |

Hi, Thankyou all for your replies. The names are Florence Constant b1877, Plumstead, Kent Charles Constant b1874, Plumstead, Kent Richard Morland b1851, Holborn, Middlesex Caroline Morland b1855, Westminster, Middlesex Caroline Morland b1877, Plumstead, Kent Emily Morland b1879, Plumstead, Kent On 1881 census the Constants were living in Woolwich and the Morlands in Plumstead. Charles Constant married Caroline Morland (jnr) didn't marry until June 1901 and they married in Woolwich. I have also found out that a Richard Morland married in 1884 in Woolwich, it may be my Richard I'm not too sure. If it is it would mean that Caroline (snr) may have died. I have tried everything I can think of. Laurie |

Hi, The indexing of the 1901 is not the best. I've found that "less is more". Name and county has found people that name and birthplace hasn't because the birthplace has been mistranscribed. I have used the birth county or the county where I believe them to be living as a key word and just put in the name and up they come. Hope this helps, Gwynne |

Have you tried a first name search, or even leaving out the place of birth because sometimes it is not what you think it is going to be. What names are you looking for? Gen |

Hi, I have just spent ages on 1901 and cannot find a single person that I am looking for. I have the details on the 1881 and I know some married or died by 1891 but I cannot find the rest. Any suggestions? Laurie |
