I have spent all day thinking about this one - Charles Henry Baker Married Jessie Elizabeth Rowe in 1883, they had several children and according to 1891 census it lists a daughter called Amanda born 1881 but if u look at the LDS site it only lists a son and he is called Orlando, the only logic is that they were possibly twins. Can u throw any light on this ?? |

The only way to know for sure, is to obtain both birth certificates, Amanda and Orlando. I agree, it does make your brain hurt sometimes. |

I found the Bakers, if they are the right one's living in Stafford on the 1881 census, they had a son John E age 1 and Orlando aged 7 weeks maybe she had another baby the same year, it is not beyond the realms of the Victorians if my relatives are anything to go by. If John and Orlando are not on the 1891 census they may have died, children seemed to die at an alarming rate. Gen |

Have you tried looking on BMD or the 1837 birth registers. It may be a transcription error. I spent months looking for a Cedra who turned out to be Clara! Yvonne |

Patricia, Two possibilities. A) Did you look at the census or a transcript? Transcribers have got funny eyesight. B) The names Orlando and Amanda can sound quite similar in dialect. Maybe the census taker made a mistake. Heaven forbid!! Jim |

I too thought that it was a transcribers error but it seems like they may have been twins. |

Are Orlando AND Amanda on the 1891, or is it just Amanda? If it is just Amanda I would think it was an error on the 1881 transcription. I can't find any records for an Orlando Baker anywhere after the 1881, but Amanda is on the 1901 in Birmingham and there's a possible marriage for her in 1902 on FreeBMD. Also Orlando is mainly an American name and perhaps the 1881 transcribers were Americans? |

yes those are the records that i have seen orlando is written on a few sites so it cant be the transcribing error, this one is a mystery, suppose i need to be searching for a death. |

The GRO index has got an Amanda Baker, 1881 Jan-Mar, Birmingham 6d 49. But there's no Orlando in that quarter or the next. I think you need to see the 1881 census on film, the transcription-error theory's looking good. If you've seen Orlando on other sites, are they independent or have they got it from the 1881 on the LDS site? |
