Can anyone out there help me with a search of the 1861 or 1871 census for Surrey. I am trying to find an elusive relative and i am getting fed up hitting my head on a brickwall! William Elliff shows up on the 1881/1891/1901 census returns as born in 1853 in Croydon Surrey, but i have been unable to find any reference to him prior to 1881. I have tried searching the FreeBMD site but no sign of his birth or death on it. I have no idea of his parents or date of birth so i am hoping someone on GC can help me out with this one.......pretty please. |

Hi Amanda Many thanks for your reply, i did check the 1837 site initially and saw an Edward but as i was under the impression that William may be the brother of a John Elliff, who had a brother Edward (born and christened in 1850) already i had overlooked it. As for James i missed that one all together, so that is definitely something to look into. Thankyou Yvette |

Update on James and Edward, After several hours of searches i am as confidant as i can be without ordering the birth certificates that neither of these are my William, however i have kept all research on the off-chance. The 1881 thru to 1901 surely cant all be wrong on his name and birthdate, and he must have come from somewhere! Oh well i guess i am going to have to invest in a huge bottle of headache tablets at this rate as William is proving very hard to find, and my brickwall now has several huge dents in it!!! Yvette |
