I can find Martin Olds in 1891 and 1901 but not 1881 can anyone shed any light? 1901 Martin Olds aged 43 born St Just Cornwall Coalminer Amelia aged 50 born St Just Cornwall Caroline aged 13 Southwick Durham Mary Susan aged 15 Southwick other children born Sunderland. Any ideas where he maybe? Liz

Hi, I found him, but I don't think it looks like the right one, I can't imagine that he would change his occupation to a coalminer and I think his age is slightly different. Thanks for trying. Liz

might he have had 2 jobs? I seem to remember one relative who was variously described as a mine and a publican

There's a couple of Olds families on 1881 who had moved from St Just Cornwall to Cumberland (Durham end of the country?) who's head of household was a miner. Maybe Martin was connected to them? Durham was a long, long way from Cornwall in those days!!!!

The OATS ain't him - I checked on the 1901 and he's there as well !!

Elizabeth, What age is Martin on the 1891 census? I wonder if the 1901 age is correct. There's a Martin Olds who died in Sunderland in 1903 aged 49. Also, there is only one Martin Olds on the 1901 census so the death record in Sunderland is too much of a coincidence. Crista

The Martin Old that Jan found is also the only one that I found in a 10 year period 1880-1890. As in 1881 he was a soldier isn't it possible that he became a coal miner on leaving the army? Also his age in 1881 would match with the death that Crista found in 1903. Perhaps his age in 1901 was mis-transcribed, it is easy enough to mistake the 5 for a 3. Anyway good luck with your search.
