Lets trace my family history just for fun, said I, years ago. Doesn`t it add up. 2 parents 4 grandparents 8 g grandparents 16 gg grandparents 32 ggg grandparents That is 62 birth certificates, 62 death certificates, 31 marriage certificates. = 155 @ £7 = £1085 Approx 100 x 20p stamps = £20 Each marriage produces an average of 2 siblings. Another 155 @ £7 = £1085 Approx 100 x 20p stamps = £20 Then there are the census discs, parish register discs or books, vitals discs. Approx £100 Grand Total = £2310 Add to that reams of paper, pens, shoe leather, bus fares, train fares, headache pills, wig to replace torn out hair, sight test and glasses, etc, etc, etc. |

Carol You forgot to double the expenditure to cover the cost of doing your spouse's family tree! Yes, it does seem expensive, but perhaps we would all feel better by averaging out the total cost over the number of years covered by our research - then it would be good value for money! A fascinating hobby almost guaranteed to keep us off street corners at night! David |
