Hi,again Margaret, It certainly wasn't impossible, just think a lot of them stayed as by that time they had made new lives for themselves and possibly felt they had nothing to return for. |

Diane If the one I think is my relative is correct, there aren't very many at all with that surname in that village. He did return, to Rutland and became a master tailor. Margaret |

Margaret, I think only the minority returned, possibly due to not being able to raise the money needed for the return fare! |

Thanks Ruth, and apologies all. I got called away and posted the thread without putting the address. Have updated the original message now! Sue |

I've just looked at this and emailed Alan with a couple of look ups. What did amaze me though was the newspaper articles. It's looks like I have a couple of persistant offenders. One was transported for 7 years. Does anyone know if they would come back after that time? Margaret |

Can I also add that Alan is a thoroughly helpful chap, who , when I asked for a search for a Bland ancestor in a particular area, he couldn't find it, he sent me all the Bland family details from all over Northants! What a star!! Steph |

For anyone researching in Northants Alan Clarke's website has a wealth of information: www(.)northants1841(.)fsnet(.)co(.)uk There are photographs, anecdotes, lists of families being researched - a veritable cornucopia!! There are numerous indexes including the following: 1841 Census Index Marriage Index Newspaper Index 1838-1846 1871 partial Census Index Burial Index Militia List Index The Newspaper Indexes give the names of those who have committed crimes and those against whom the crimes have been committed. Alan can give further information relating to the actual newspaper article if any of them appear to belong to you! Plenty to keep you amused! Sue |
