Parish Records - daft question!

I realise that prior to 1837 you have to search the parish records for births but was wondering, if a birth, post 1837, does not appear on the IGI, will it still be recorded in the parish records? Also, if you wanted to view any parish records, would you have to make an appointment? Jeanette

The IGI only transcribed the parishes they were allowed to do, so many are not transcribed at all, so it's quite likely you will find what you are looking for in a Record Centre, not all need you to book in advance, but it's probably preferable, specially if you are a special journey, and some also need you to take proof of identification also

The IGI is not totally complete so even if your ancestor does not appear they may be listed in parish registers. If you know which church your ancestor was christened in you can find the registers at your local archive or a nearby family history centre. If you look on the Genuki site they usually list where parish registers are kept in various regions. The LDS family history centres will order fiches of the registers you are interested in for a small fee from anywhere in the country you can find the one nearest to you on the LDS site.

Sometimes a record will appear on the IGI but not in the actual parish register. George

If the entry is missing on the parish records it may be that it is taken from the Bishops transcripts these were copied from the registers shortly after the original entries were made.Occaisionally children which had been legitemised by marriage were entered on these records with only the revised name. Some are kept in London if you use your search engine you can find out more.

Parish records only recorded baptisms and not births. Baptisms may not have taken place or could often take place many months or even years after the birth. Sometimes the date of birth is given. Before 1837 - no baptism - no record! John

Thanks Alison and John. As the person I'm looking for was born c.1852 I'm hopeful there will be a record somewhere Jeanette
