I am trying to find my Weirs, a military family, after their return from Malta, in the late 1840's thro 1850's. They probably settled in the vicinity of the Bloomsbury, St. George Hanover Square region of London. Names are William or Charles Weir. Royal Artillery, (or ex) Elizabeth Weir, wife. Elizabeth Weir, daughter, born 1844 Malta. Ann Ellen Weir, daughter, born 1846 Malta. There may be other children. Any help would be much appreciated.Diana.

Thanks for the offer Max, but I'm not sure which area they settled in. So that little idea of how to find them is no good. Thanks for letting me know, so I'll start in a new direction, if I can think of one. Frustrating this hobby at times isn't it? All the best, Di.

I think probably in Malta Max. I know Anne Ellen born 1846 was their daughter and also I'm pretty sure William born 1841 in Malta, died in 1846, and Elizabeth born 1844 in Malta. I also found a David on the 1881 and 1901 censuses born Malta 1849/50 working in Plumstead as a barman and in 1891 as a gen laborer, at 116 Ham or Ann St, Plumstead, London with a family and I think he also may be a son. One daughter is called Ellen, maybe named after Auntie Ann Ellen. On their marriage certificate Ann Ellen and husband Jesse Jones give as their address 35 Winchester Street, which is either in the Pimlico area behind Victoria Station or in the Acton area. I should imagine the former as they were married in the St Geo, Hanover Square area by banns and I think Pimlico is the closest to that. By the way I was assuming they were both living at the same address as they worked there, but he could have been a lodger with her family, couldn't he? If you see anything helpful in that long screed, I'd be most appreciative if you can help me. Meanwhile I've just fired off emails to the archives people to see if they could check if William IS William or Charles and to the record copying dept for a quote on getting a copy of his records from the Army Musters and Payroll Lists, Royal Horse Artillery, 4th battalion, reference WO 10. I'm stubborn and the harder the search the longer I keep going. That's the British bulldog in me!!! Thanks Max for taking the time to read this and for trying to help. You are indeed a gem, and one of the most helpful on the board. All the best to you and Vicky and Jason, Di.xx
