Hi Carla. Looked on my cd for Susan Ball's marriage and there wasn't ANY notation for Susan Ball. However, there was a marriage notation for Mathew Smith in Port Huron, Michigan. I believe Port Huron is on the Ontario/Michigan border. Could this be your Mathew? (There weren't any applicable notations for Matthew Smith.) Mathew Smith, married in Port Huron in 1894. Province of record source: Ontario. Comments: Oil refiner. Source: D W Carpenter, St Clair County Marriages: People from Lambton County and elsewhere in Ontario who were married in St Clair County, Michigan 1839-1898, Past to Present, Corunna, ON. Volume/Page(s): 75 On the InGeneas site (must pay to order records) is an immigration record for Susan Amelia Ball, immigrated in 1878. http://www*ingeneas*com/ingeneas/index.html (replace * with .) In case you don't have this information, I've found the Smith cemetery, http://www*islandnet*com/ocfa/homepage.html : SMITH, Susan Ann (Ball), Hillsdale, Petrolia, Lambton, Enniskillen, LB-939-2 SMITH, Matthew (h/o Susan Ann Ball), Hillsdale, Petrolia Lambton, Enniskillen, LB-939-2 SMITH, Beverly C. (s/o Matthew & Susan), Hillsdale, Petrolia, Lambton, Enniskillen, LB-939-2 I think I found all of the Matthew/Susan references, but you might double-check. I didn't find anything for Northcote/Ball. I did notice (1901 census) that Frederick was an 'oil receiver' -- and the above Mathew Smith was an oil refiner. Please let me know if I may help in any other way. |

Hi Carla. It's 1:30 am here, so I'm making this quick. I quickly scanned the Ontario site for marriages but didn't see anything. I will check the cd when I can. I was nosey and wanted to check the Toronto Directories -- a 'Northcote, F blksmith' is listed and if I read it correctly, his shop was on 40 Tecumseth. If that was his correct address, his shop was 8 blocks from my ancestor's shop! You can find his reference on http://historicity.tpl.toronto.on.ca/ Click on the red Enter button and be sure to click on the 'Toronto City Directories' before running a search. There were quite a few listings for Northcote, but I chose to look at Toronto Directory for 1881, record 10 of 11. If this is your Northcote, I'm sure he is listed in other directories. I believe this would be his home address. I will look some more after tomorrow night. Good night for now, Lisa. |

Hello Lisa Thanks so much for your kind offer. I am more than happy to wait til it's convenient for you to resume lookups but thought I get this off to you now. Could you please look to find a marriage for Mathew Smith and Susan Ann Ball c1892-1894 in the Ontario area. They were both English. I have them in the 1901 census in Lambton East, aged 39 and 33 respectively. And the marriage of Frederick Northcote / Northcott and Elizabeth Jane Ball c 1882-1884 in the same area as above. I have them in the 1901 census in Lambton East, aged 42 and 38 respectively. They are both English. Thank you so much for your extremely kind offer. bye for now - Carla (Western Australia) |

Hi KAREN: None of the Clemm...names showed up on my cd. On the 1901 Canadian Census: Alex Clemet and family, but it looks like he was born in Ontario in 1869. Mathew Clemet? and family; I cannot read the transcription Fredk Clemmett and family; looks like the father was born in England and arrived in Canada in 1877. Here is the census site: http://automatedgenealogy*com/census/cache/NationalSummary.jsp (replace * with .) Note: you can view the original documents. I didn't find any marriages in Ontario, but I didn't try every spelling variation either. http://homepages.rootsweb*com/~maryc/ontmarr.htm Have you tried google searches using the various spellings and other key words like genealogy, Canada, Ontario, etc? If you know a bit more about the family I would be happy to help further. |

Hi MARIA. From my cd: Goater, Harry James, 1881, living, Yates Street Ward, Victoria. Storeroom clerk. Province of record source: British Columbia; Source: Extracts from the 1891 Federal Census of British Columbia, Microfilm #T6290-T6292, National Archives of Canada, Ottawa. Volume/Page(s): FN75 Also noted with the same details: Goater, Hg James ?. You have probably seen him mentioned on the 1901 census, but in case you haven't: http://automatedgenealogy*com/census/cache/NationalSummary.jsp (replace * with .) He was a farmhand who lived with quite a few other farmhands. I can't find anything on a fire. Hope this site works: http://www.virtualmuseum.ca/pm.php?id=search_record_detail&fl=&lg= English&ex=00000239&rd=120155&sy=&st=goater&ci= Perhaps this is your Edward Goater? (If you can't access it, I googled 'Edward Goater' and searched for Goater on the 'Roots & Birth of Mirror 1870 to 1930' site. Found on my cd a Goater, E., 1902, living, Lacombe. Province of record source:Alberta. County of record source: Red Deer; Comments: Farmer. Source: Gronlund's Directory of the City & District of Calgary for 1902. Volume/Page(s): 160 Telephone directories for Canada, in the event you would like to contact a Goater: http://www.canada411.ca/ There are only 8 listed; they live in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. Best of luck in your interesting tale. |

Hi RICHARD On the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid, (http://www.islandnet*com/ocfa/ (replace * with .) is: Surname Given Name Cemetery County Township Reference BOYD, Georgina (Kirkpatrick) (w/o John E. Boyd), Perrytown Anglican, Northumberland, Hope, LGS-075 BOYD, John Edward (h/o Georgina Kirkpatrick), Perrytown Anglican, Northumberland, Hope, LGS-07 BOYD, Stanley Nelson (s/o John & Georgina Boyd), Perrytown Anglican, Northumberland, Hope, LGS-075 BOYD, William Leonard (s/o John & Georgina Boyd), Perrytown Anglican, Northumberland, Hope, LGS-075 I know you didn't reference Stanley or William, but thought I would mention the above. I noticed there is a gap between a couple of the children on the 1881 census; there's a chance this could be your family, if two of the sons died young. But thinking it over, the 1881 census shows them in Toronto and I don't believe Hope was near Toronto. Here is the Ontario Marriages site, in case it helps: http://homepages.rootsweb*com/~maryc/ontmarr.htm Let me think about what else I can try, ok? PS The Toronto Public Library has directory images. Seems kind of coincidental: in 1881 there is a listing for 'Boyd Robt, shoemaker, 68 Scollard. Above him is Mrs. R Boyd, wid, 66 Scollard. Wonder if they are connected to your John Boyd, shoemaker? Site: http://historicity.tpl.toronto.on.ca/ (There may be more Boyd's - just noticed that one) |

Hi SUSAN. They were not listed on my Canadian cd index. Nor were they listed on: Ontario Marriages (but it isn't complete!): http://homepages.rootsweb*com/~maryc/ontmarr.htm (replace * with .) InGeneas (which also isn't complete): http://www*ingeneas*com/free/index.html 1901 Canadian census: http://automatedgenealogy*com/census/cache/NationalSummary.jsp National Archives of Canada, Home Children 1869-1930: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/0201_e.html I did not try Soldiers of the First World War (looking for a son of either person, as next of kin is mentioned on their attestation papers): http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/0201_e.html (look for Soldiers of the First World War) Sorry, I couldn't find anything. You might try posting a query and see if anyone can help you. I'm not too familiar with child immigrants. PS As I'm sure you are aware, be careful with family tales. I was told one ancestor left France, lived in England just long enough to change his name and left immediately for Canada. The tale is either wrong, or he was reallllyyyyy slow, as that line lived in England at least 100 years. |

Hi Bernice. I suppose you know about this, but in the event that you don't, there is a wonderful website about 'The Genealogy of the Flowers, Chatterton and Related Families on the Shores of the Bay of Chaleur.' Your Robert Flowers and Alice Pennington are mentioned. http://www*chaleurgenealogy.beyondgrandmasattic*com/ (replace * with .) In addition, I know you mentioned a later date, but this was on the Canadian cd for 'Flowers': Province of record source: Québec; Year: Abt 1767; Event: Living; Comments: Family. Loyalists. Source: Bona Arsenault, L'Acadie des Ancêtres, Le Conseil de la Vie française en Amérique, Université Laval, Québec, 1955. Volume/Page(s): 343 Hope the website is new to you. They probably have much more information than I could ever uncover (and would have uncovered census). Best of luck. PS There are quite a few sites regarding Flowers. One is: http://www*onelibrary*com/Genealogy/pennington/pafn01.htm It mentions the Pennington's and one mention of Flowers. You've probably seen all of the Flowers' notations, but in the event you haven't, you might want to do a google search for something like 'Flowers New Carlisle genealogy'. |

Hi STEVE. Unfortunately, the only marriage site I know about is http://homepages.rootsweb*com/~maryc/ontmarr.htm (replace * with .) and it only covers 1800-1924. All of my ancestors lived in/were from Ontario and only a few are listed on the site, so it certainly doesn't cover everyone. Have you checked the 1901 National Census for Canada: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/cache/NationalSummary.jsp It may say when Thomas arrived (if you know his age in 1901). I checked my Canadian index cd and I didn't see any Richard or Thomas from the Frome, St. Thomas area. Canadian records are VERY difficult to obtain in the 1900's+. However, you might try the Ontario Vital Statistics site: http://www*gov.on.ca/ They may be able to help you. Please let me know if I can try to help in any other way? |

MARGARET, there were 5 Darlison's mentioned on the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid site (http://www.islandnet*com/ocfa/). None matched yours. There were quite a few William and Margaret Christie's mentioned, but it is an index, so there's no way of determining your Christie's. Two Campany: Jenetta and William M. William Mossom is mentioned. None of your names were found in the Toronto, Ontario Directories. I suppose you've already found Happy's marriage, eh? She is on the Ontario Marriages site: http://homepages.rootsweb*com/~maryc/ontmarr.htm Darlisons weren't listed; sorry don't remember if I checked the others. I wrote to one of the oldest cemeteries in my home town and asked if they had any records of my ancestor. Turns out he was buried there. Do you know where 'your people' lived? If so, you could try writing to the old cemeteries in town. Best of luck with your search, please let me know if I can help in any other way. |

Dear Lisa I am looking for any info on an Edwin Goater born England 1860 who emigrated to Canada (not sure exactly when - late 1880s?) . Also Henry James Goater born England 1854 who emigrated to British Columbia in 1876 and was believed to have died in a forest fire. He is listed on the 1881 Canadian census. It sounds a fascinating story and I'd love more details. Thanks for taking the time to read this, with very best wishes Maria Parkinson |

Thanks for trying Lisa. Most of those were for Ontario - at least that is where I had them on the 1871/81 census. Thomas Darlison was born here c1806 (Province unknown) while his father was in the army. They later returned to England where John had more children. |
