I have far too many names to put in here!! That says a little about how many marriage certs I have! When there is a real site to enter them, I will do it willingly, but not here where it will soon disappear. Sadly, this is no help to anyone- sorry. Wendy |

UPDATE: My clever bloke has volunteered to help me set up a better version of this website, where you can input your own details and then do searches. Anyone who has sent me details - I will use these as a base - but I suggest no more e-mails until things are sorted. Watch this Space! George |

Hi Pamela, Yes, I have several marriages where the witnesses to the marriage were later marries to each other. And yes, many of them took place in County Durham, but not exclusively. Debbie |

Thanks - yes, place married does mean where the people witnessed the marriage. It makes sense to have two lists - one for place in case you want to search for bride and groom, rather than see if your ancestors were witnesses or not. |

Georgina I've just had a look at your site and it seems to work brilliantly. I assume the heading Place Married means where the person was Witness to a Marriage. Well done! Sue |

Looking at 1900-1940s church register recently for family mariages I realised that it had been the custom for engaged couples to act as marriage witnesses (eg my engaged, but not yet married grandparents witnessed my grandfathers second marriage the same year, and various others which made it possible to realise that a maiden aunt had been engaged, but her fiance was killed in 1st ww (and find him on the debt of honour roll). Has anyone else come across this or was it a recent or purely local (Durham) custom? Pam |

Don't mind lots of e-mails - makes me look popular at least!! Just as long as people bear in mind that if I get lots, it may takes some time. |

Okay - I've put up a page with the alphabetical listings and created two samples pages for listings for surnames under 'A' and 'B'. Be grateful if someone would click on the links and check they work. http://www(.)personal(.)leeds(.)ac.uk/~phy7grl Feedback welcome. But this should be a simple list system, and I'm not a great web artist! |

Georgina That's really good of you and will be much appreciated. Would it be easier if we all email you direct with the details you need from us - even if we have already posted them? Please let us know. Thanks in anticipation. |

I'll sick my neck out and say I'm willing to give it a go at compling a list o Marriage Witnesses ONLY. I'm allowed web space at my uni so can do an alphabetical list, where you click on a letter to get to a surname page. Any suggestions please let me know - it'll be slow, but if I can put in 1/2 hr - 1hr a day adding lists from e-mails sent to me it should work ??????? I'll want Last name, first name, place listed on certificate, registration district, date and a reference number for peolple to order at the FHC or online. Your e-mail would also be helpful, so people can double check details. Who knows, you could even find links to family! |
