RC ancestors and brick walls

I'm sure some of you with RC ancestors have the same problem as I have in that you can't find their marriage on the St Cath's Index and therefore, can't get the fathers names, maiden name etc. In my case, I think it's because they were so poor, they didn't want the added expense of paying for the registrar. So, they married in the eyes of the RC church but it was not registered. Don't despair!....it is well worth the effort to visit the local Record Office and look at the parish register for marriages. They are handwritten and some give more details than others. You don't get the fathers occupations like you would on a marriage certificate, but if you are lucky, the priest will record the counties of birth if not local. Sue Surrey |
