Hi, sorry to be a purveyor of doom, but it may have been bombed in the war, or made into a car park! I had an exact address in Marsham Street, near a pub. The pub was there (derelict, but listed) the house was part of a multi- storey car park, (1980's 'regeneration' of an area). Our family also had a house in Albert Road Southampton that had been in our family for 99 years. It was bombed in the war. Albert Road is still there, the same number is still there, but it isn't 'our' house. I know this cos my mum was aged 9 and living there when it was destroyed! I think your best bet would be an old (pre war) map of the area Mags

Sorry LYnda I was forgetting that I usually go for DVDs if they are available and one does not have to keep swapping discs. And who said anything about minutes? Len

Lynda ~ Report 3 Feb 2004 23:23

Len Please don't tell everyone it only takes a few minutes to scroll up and down a Street. Sometimes I have found Streets that are on 3 or 4 discs, which just changing them over is time consuming. Although Rick gave me a number, which wasn't listed, some people don't give any number and will expect me to plough through pages and pages, which I really don't have time to do (wish I did) This isn't a moan, but didn't want people to think it's a couple of minutes job and ask for a look up for a Street which has 100's of numbers and expect me to look at every house. Lynda p.s Maz Thanks for calling me lovely!!!!

Rick If someone has a copy of the 1871 for Kensington, don't be diffident about asking. In the 1891, once the street is found it does not take very long to scroll up and down each side looking for a name - even in a long road. Sometimes the handwiting is a bit of a scrawl though. I will have a look in my copy of the 1881 if you like but for that I need a full name and date of birth (and county of birth, if available) Len

Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Sioux - that's a fascinating article. My ancestors lived in Latimer Road and Blechynden Street too - you can almost smell it !! Karen - I was a bit suspicious on the numbering when it failed to appear on the census index anyway. I think you may be right about trawling through all of the pages. Unfortunately it's not me who has the census images, there are an awful lot of households to ask someone else to look through. Thanks, Rick.

Hi Rick One word of caution (sorry)! Be aware that in the late 1800s house numbers had a tendency to be changed, as many streets were renumbered to a new system of 'odds' and 'evens'. So, you may have to search the whole street to find your family. Karen

I haven't read all your replies so maybe someone else has already found 75 Walmer Road. I have a copy of the 1891 London Census and it is there, in Kensington (which, presumably covers Notting Hill0. The reference is RG12/25 and it is on sheet 50. In 1891 there seemed to be about 10 residents and the main surname looked like Mealing If you go to www(.)streetmap(.)co(.)uk you will get a very clear diagram Len

Thanks Sioux - great photo ! I've been scanning lots of old family photos into my collection. The oldest one I've found so far is 1905. Multimap hasn't helped really. The trouble is the road is so long that I need to pinpoint exactly where number 75 is to give the nice lady with the scanned census images an idea where to look for my family. It would take forever to go through systematically. If I could tell her it's such & such building or on the corner of a certain side street, then she might have a hope of finding it. Thanks for your help anyway, Rick.

Hi Rick, Try typing in www.multimap(.)com and put in Walmer Road W11 in the search ... it will give you the option of half a dozen throughout the country... choose the London one then you can zoom in. This won't tell you where No 75 is but you can see the side streets. Sioux

Thanks all for the advice. Still no closer to finding exactly where number 75 is. Anyone out there live in Notting Hill and fancy a walk ? :-) Rick.

I am a family tree 'virgin' but pride myself on being fairly good at web searching. I often read through various message boards to see if I can help. I typed in the address on mappoint.msn. com. I don't know if this is any help. I also did a general search in 'google' under '75 walmer road london w11'. but there was too much to trawl through, particularly since I do not know exactly what you are after. As a general tip, I often, when searching for specific info and can't find it on relevant sites do a general google search. It has produced significant results on a variety of subjects, if you have the patience to trawl through the irrelevant stuff. Don't forget to check the images, groups, directory and news tabs on google. They can provide releveant links if not the info you require. If this is helpful, please contact me at [email protected] This is because I am starting a web site, haven't quite decided what to have on it yet, but if I am significantly succsesful in helping people with searches through message boards, I may use that as a theme. thanx and I hope this helps. ps. don't forget the other search engines like altavista and another good one is dogpile.

Maz - sorry - there's a red wine induced typo in my post last night !! I meant Walmer Road all along & that's what Lynda looked up for me. I've corrected it in now in the original post. Can anyone offer any help ? Thanks, Rick.

From the current A to Z, Walmer Street is not Notting Hill, but Marylebone BUT BUT there IS a Walmer ROAD in Notting Hill! Maybe ask the lovely Lynda to try that instead! Maz. XX

I have a birth certificate for my great grandfather from 1873 which gives his mother's address as 75, Walmer Road, London. I know this address is in Notting Hill, but don't live in London myself. Lynda Pace (thank you Lynda !!) looked the address up in the 1871 census, but although the road is there, there's no specific entry for this address number and if I understand her correctly it's because I'm probably looking for the building or terrace name rather than a house number for her to find it in the address index. Does anyone have some tips about how to find it ? I've looked everywhere I can think on the internet for clues (Estate Agents, Business Directories etc.) As a long shot, does anyone live in Notting Hill who might travel down Walmer Road ever ? Knowing which side Streets are close to number 75 that might give a clue (OK - I 'm getting delusional now I know). Thanks for any advice or opinions, Rick.
