I've signed up for Essex 1861. I also am a bit worried about the software, but if I get stuck will be asking lots of questions!!!

I think its great everyone trying to help and I'm sure we will all help each other if we get stuck. Dont think there will be any problems there! And how brilliant will it be to see it all for free? When I first got my CD and looked at the forms I thought "oh my God" but when I sat and looked it is just putting the info you see (if you can see it!) on the form. A few codes you need for certain things but I think once you have sorted your first parts out it is just typing it out. I spent hours on doing my first 6 pages before I sent them in, checking it all. But it all does get checked and doubled checked and I was told not to worry about spelling etc. Carol my co-ordinator is very helpful and I'm sure the others will be too. Good luck. Best wishes, Jox

Hi all I read this thread with interest because I have always wanted to do some transcribing, but thought you had to have a microfiche reader. After reading all your comments, I realised that you can do the 1861 from CD. So, I looked to see just which counties were involved in the 1861 project, and low and behold, my old home town Melton Mowbray was there, with no one allocated. Needless to say, I contacted the co-ordinator for Leicestershire, and guess what, I am doing Melton Mowbray!!! Just waiting now for her to get back to me, and ofcourse for the CD to come. I have never done anything like this before, so it will be a new experience. However, after reading all your messages, and offers of support, I am not worried. If I come to grief, I'll just yell for help from you guys!!!!!! Thanks everyone Lisa

I must admit when I first saw the info I thought oh my goodnes I can't do this but Carol is brilliant at explaing as I hope the other co-ordinators are. Keep up the good work Ann,Doing 1861 for part of Darlington

Hi all, After reading Carol's plea for help I volunteered the same day and received my CD last Friday. I've completed ten pages, sent it to my co-ordinator for checking and have been given the go-ahead to carry on. If you have time in between transcribing then the UK Census Help Mailing List is very interesting to read and there are lots of queries and answers on there to help if you get stuck. You discover that nearly everyone has a problem of some sort - you are not alone!! I've also found the IGI useful using the Batch Numbers to help in deciphering names and the Genuki site for towns and villages. This is my first attempt at transcribing and after the initial set-up, when I had to call on hubby's computer knowledge because I'm a technophobe, I've found it easy to enter the info. Good luck to everyone involved with this worthwhile project. Yvonne

I copied all the replies the other day for Carol to see and she said she was and all the other co-ordinators were so pleased by the response, I think I did post that earlier, haven't checked so....excuse me if I'm wrong! Have had a few problems that needed sorting out so havent been as attentive as I would normally but its "soo" good to see all the replies and I'm sure we will all work together and we will reap the rewards when we see more transcriptions on the site. Originally I had told Carol that I was sure she would get some help from a post on here and we were all really like a big "family" and do you know I'm sat with tears in my eyes writting this! I think we've done proud and lets hope it all goes well and I'm sure we can all help each other out if and when we get stuck. Good luck amd Best of Wishes, Jo

Hi Karen, It was me!! My co-ordinator suggested that I transcribed about 10 pages, emailed them to him so that he could see I wasn't making any stupid mistakes. The only one I'd made was to duplicate the schedule number when the household was split onto 2 pages, so make sure you don't do that. Otherwise it seemed to be okay and he said to carry on. Perhaps you should contact your co-ordinator again and ask them whether they want to do an intial check or if you're to complete the disc. Must admit I'm enjoying doing it and feel I'm gaining a lot of knowledge about the lives of our ancestors and the area at that time, hope all of you do too. Yvonne

I've got my CD and am now doing Worcester 1861. Must admit the first time I looked at it I thought Oh Lord what have I let myself in for but now I've got into it, it's getting much easier to do and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks to Jo for starting this thread. Well done. By the way I've been subscribed to the Census helpers list and thats really useful if your coordinators not about. Speak to you all soon Jen x (Page 20 and going strong)
