Hi Zoe I have had a look for you. It looks to me like it begins with Le and then possibly w and ends in on. Sorry cant be more help. I would contact the GRO by email and tell them that you cannot read the mothers maiden name, they may be able to tell you or issue you with a better quality replacement certificate. I even looked on the IGI to see if there was a marriage listed on there for them, but nothing. I did find a few baptism records of children of Robert Walker Webb and Martha though, here they are incase you havent already found them: Mary Ann Walker Webb born 18.10.1840 christened 18.01.1844 St Leonards Shoreditch. Charles Lawrence Webb born 23.08.1845 christened 27.10.1845 St Leonards Shoreditch Martha Walker Webb christened 23.08.1838 St Leonards shoreditch Robert Walker Webb born 08.11.1843 christened 04.02.1844 St Leonards shoreditch. William Walker Webb born 04.10.1847 christened 15.11.1847 St leonards shoreditch. Unfortunately none of them have the mothers maiden name. Regards Sharon

If you compare the first letter with the "S" of Street in the first column, they are similar. I think the name may start with an S. The guy hasn't been consistant in forming any of his letters nor did he always dot his "i"s. Could she have had a foreign surname? Jill

Zoe

Zoe Report 25 Mar 2004 18:02

Jill, This is teh first positive lead I have to her maiden name at all. Her husband was from Cambridge and the children were born in London. I don't have them on any census yet so can't even say if she was born abroad. Zoe

Don't know what to suggest. I keep looking at it! I found some of my rellies (eventually) on 1891. The surname was SAYERS. It had been transcribed as LAYERS. The "S" was formed in a similar way to the initial letter of you elusive lady. Hope you sort it out. Jill

Zoe Stick with Lemmon, looks very similar to how my father wrote, so it was easy to read, I had to stop writing like that as my children couldn't read my writing when they were young!!!!Us oldies wrote very differently to how you write these days. Anne
