Been away and trying to catch up with some things. I thought I would add this from Carol I think it will answer some qeries. Hi All Just a quick note to let you know that I will be on holiday from 8-18th April and back at my computer on the 19th. If you have any problems/questions you can contact the Helpers List, go to the Freecen website and contact Dave Newbury or Brenda Bowbren and they will get back to you. It may well be that some of you have not yet received your CDs due to the company providing them having a hectic period. Please bear with us and they will be with you asap. Speak with you upon my return and will give an update on the project. Regards Carol Barber Best of wishes, Jo

Yvonne have you downloaded Genie the place locator?? It's great help if you ae unsure about a place Ann

~Von~ Report 4 Apr 2004 14:21

Hi Ann, Having read my posting again, what I should have said was put it in 'as is' and then add what you know it to be in column Y. As I live in Grimsby, Lincs and I'm transcribing nearby villages I know what most of the villages are, so hope it will be helpful eventually to people searching on the FreeCen site. Sometimes the names look like gobbledigook and I've had to just put an x and hope someone else can decipher it, but I hate being beaten!!! Von

Ann L from Darlo Report 4 Apr 2004 11:41

Yvonne I was told to have little go and as long as you put an x in the cell next to it to make the checker aware that is ok, but not to put what you think without putting the x in--if you see what i mean ann,Darlington

Hi Happy Band of Transcribers! I've just come across the surname True. Excel wouldn't accept it and kept changing it into caps and shooting it to the middle of the column. In case anyone else has this problem with any words the cure is to put an apostrophe before the name and then tab to the next column. Karen As I understand it we are not supposed to put what we think things are but transcribe 'as is'. I believe we can put our suggestion of the right spelling in column Y but I gather from the Help List it will be sorted out further down the line. Perhaps Jo can tell me if I'm doing it right!! Von

Karen, i think you would be more than fine going back to work!! Lets hope you finnish the Cd first! But I think you will be well on your way to doing that, keep practising! Ann, I down loaded that too, it's very good if you get stuck or think that cant be a place or the writting is a bit difficult! I just put it up and refer if I need it.

Well, I have started transcribing. It is a bit fiddley to start with. But the notes that I downloaded from Terry's site were very useful. I also went to Cyndi's list and downloaded the parishes etc - that helped a LOT. I have done approx half a page - not bad considering I have got a runny nose and have to keep blowing it!! Just hope I am doing it correctly. Kathy

Sounds a bit confusing that Karen, I would note the line number, so you can get to it easier, and ask whats best to put!!! I supose its how the enumerator has expressed it. You seem to be going hammer and tongs at this, best of luck! Havent had much time myself and only been on the computer for snatches. I'm sure the Cds will arrive shortly for all who are waiting......

Hi Karen If you type an apostrophe before the hyphen and then tab to the next column it just leaves a hyphen. Von

Ann L from Darlo

Ann L from Darlo Report 30 Mar 2004 08:59

Hi All to you Happy Band of TC's An answere from Carol to my querIf the enumerator has written 3b then you type Sched 0,if no address - a hyphen in the address column and then in the next one letter b. This lets the researcher know it was a building of some sort. You need to allocate 3 lines --retyping the same on each one Regards Ann

Diane Report 29 Mar 2004 21:05

Having transcribed quite a lot for this worthy cause, there should be some instructions on how to enter data etc that is On-line via Free Cens. Or, your co-ordinator would be able to send you a sheet. All the 1891 for Cornwall is on-line and 1841 almost completed and 1861 on the go. Generally transcribe what is there - even if you know it to be wrong - for instance a place name. As the input will be checked don't worry about it, just get it into the programme and off to be checked Diane
