I went to the Family History Fair last weekend and picked up two v. useful booklets published by the Federation of Family History Societies: Marriage & Census Indexes for family historians, by Jeremy Gibson & Elizabeth Hampson, which is arranged by county and has many helpful people willing to search their various indexes and provide you with copies of interest for a few pounds, and Specialist Indexes for family historians, by the same people, which includes things like indexes of pupils for certain schools, lists of local ship owners, inquest holdings, criminal registers, people sentenced to transportation in Nottingham, probate records, apprenticeships, newspaper indexes etc etc all arranged by county.
