Thank you for looking. Experience with censuses suggests they're probably there, but findable only by someone who can justify spending ages looking (i.e. a family member looking for that particular family - such as me!). Maybe they were still in Ugborough - but I have no idea, yet, where I could start to look. My trace-the-neighbours trick only works if you know who the neighbours are and the family hasn't moved somewhere else! I don't know how your census CD works, but if the index is based on transcriptions, I have found some mistranscriptions in Ancestry where I can entirely sympathise with the transcriber: I knew they were wrong only because I'd got the info on the family over a period of time and could re-interpret the script because of that. A BARRON family that really did look like BARROW, and a RUSE family that looked much more like HUSE! - And those sorts of changes don't come up on Soundex. Thank you again for your hunting on my behalf. Christine

Hi Sally Thanks for doing this. I am looking for a Margaret Toal, widowed, aged 48, living with her 2 sons, Francis aged 13 and John aged 10. She was living at Fore Street, East Stonehouse in 1841. Her name was spelt Toll on that census but I have seen Toole on her gravestone!!! Maggie

Janet Report 26 Mar 2005 18:40

Hi Sally I have Bennett's on my husbands side of the family who, according to the 1881 census where born in Lamerton, Devon. Unfortunately they wouldn't have been around in 1851, but may be you know if they are related to your Bennett's. WILLIAM Bennett was born c.1853 and in 1881 was married to Mary (nee Birkett). he was an iron miner and they were living in Millom, Cumberland. He has 2 unmarried brothers living with him, also iron miners, RICHARD born c.1857 and JOHN born c.1861. By 1901 RICHARD had married Mary Jane (maiden name as yet unknown). He was still an iron miner in Millom, but his place of birth is given as Tavistock, Devon. Kind regards, Janet.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me the Piece, Folio and Page numbers for the entry on Ann Littlejohns. I'd previously been told that.... 'I also note that in 1851 your ancestor Ann Littlejohns was working for Richard Blatchford, age 45, and his mother Mary, age 79, at Lower Studen in Okehampton. Ann was said to be 14.' .... and I'd like to have a definitive reference for that entry. Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia
