According to The Oxford Names Companion it is short for Wilhelmina, which was introduced into this country after Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, who was, of course, German, and German things, including names, became fashionable. Good luck in searching to all and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Jean |

Thanks for all those suggestions. I tried searching for her as Minnie but nothing came up hence why I believe it must be shortened version of something!! Cheryl |

Deborah, I can't believe someone else has a Minnie Maria in their family apart from me! Makes me wonder if maybe they are named after someone famous? My Minnie (Palin, nee Goffin) caused a big family mystery! I couldn't find her on official documents or census records. I was lucky that her hubby had a very unusual name. From his name, I found her birth name--Alice! No-ONE in my family knew her as Alice. 2 weeks ago, I found her whole family on census records, and found she had a sister, Minna. I can't yet find Minna anywhere after this, so wonder if perhaps Minna died, and Alice took her name. |

My great great grandmother was christened Minnie Louisa - so it can be just the name itself by birth. |

My Grandmother was named Minnie. Her mother, and all other siblings had at least two names, but she was stuck with just that one name and she hated it. She thought her mother must have had it in for her to name her that...LOL She called herself Mary instead except for legal papers. Minnie was not short for any other name in her case. Sandra |
