http://www.hemelhempsteadtoday(.)co.uk/ The local history section of this site has loads of interesting articles and memories of the areas surrounding Hemel Hempstead. Well worth a browse if your ancestors came from the area.

If you have Hertfordshire ancestors check out HALS and Hertfordshire family history society. Some of the publications are very interesting. www.hertsdirect.org/libsleisure/heritage1/HALS/ http://www.hertsfhs.org.uk/hfphs6.htm

I have just started a thread on the Records Office board, for parish register entries from Hertfordshire. I have typed up all the photocopies I have for Baptisms, marriages and burials that I have collected, whilst doing my own research. Mine are mostly Rickmansworth, with a few for Watford & Bushey. I have invited anyone to add theirs, so we can get a little database going. Please take a look, you never know - some of your ancestors maybe there. Please feel at liberty to add any of your own, that may help someone else. Debbie

GOOD BOOKS Has anyone come across any good local history books about any Hertfordshire villages? You know the kind I mean - the ones that mention the people of old, legends, memories and gossip? If so, please recommend them here. For instance I can recommend 'St Ippolyts - a country parish in the nineteenth century' by Daphne Rance (thanks Georgie) which mentions several of my ancestors including the poor CRAWLEY family that were almost wiped out in a cholera epidemic in 1849. Thanks Kim Isn't this hobby fun?????? :-))))) Did I say hobby, lol, more like obsession! By the way, someone is already doing (has done) my husbands tree, so I am off the hook there, haha. What I am stuck on (do you really want to hear this?) is these Walkern families, such a small village, such large families, and all the names are the same. Usual story. I have 2 Sarah Warners, one born 1792, one born 1821, well, infact there are more but I think these are my two, well, it could turn out only to be one, very confusing. I thought the 1821 one married James Aldridge in 1836, but looking at other peoples trees, they have the older one marrying him. To make matters worse, his mother was called Sarah Warner and I thought this was the 1792 one (James was born in 1812or 1814ish). She married William Aldridge in 1812. My problem is that I don't now know whose father is who, and am very confused. I have asked for look ups but the fathers names weren't mentioned apparently. So, I am stuck. I have a couple of contacts to e-mail, so might do that today, and see what they think, and how they have come to their conclusions on this matter. My Culvers are another story. I am unfortunately descended from William Henry Culver (b. 1841) who was illegitimate, and still don't know who his father was. I have sent for his marriage cert to see what is on, but you can bet it won't have a fathers name down, but I live in hope. That should come this week. His mother's parents I still am having a problem with too. From what I can decipher, their name seemed to change from Calvert to Culver with a move from Little or Great Munden to Walkern. My problem is taking them back further, and being sure of their original name. John and Sarah Culver (nee Phillips I think, but can't be sure), both born 1796ish, him baptised in Little Munden, and her in Standen. Anyway, there we are, a long frustrating story!!!!! I knew you would wish you hadn't asked!! Lololololol Lisa xx
