My Punter family were transcribed on ancestry as Beuter and on the pro site as Printer. Lucia

On 1901 my Cartlidge family were transcibed as Crullidge - took me ages to find them!! Tracey

I have one that isn't a mistranscription, more a misunderstanding. I found some relatives on the 1891 census on Ancestry down as born in 'Gate, Northumberland, SCT.' I know its close to the border, but I didn't think Northumberland had moved to Scotland. I looked at the originally, and found they were born in the little village of Scotland Gate. Helen

Selena Can I suggest looking at Baleman. While I've been transcribing I've noticed that people tended to forget to cross their t's. Worth a try! Jeanette (or should that be Jeanelle! lol)

I've been looking for the birth of my g g grandfather for ages. I've worked out that whereas his father registered the eldest brothers birth, after that is was the illiterate mum who had an Irish accent and maybe adenoidal trouble etc etc . So how would the poor registrar or census taker write Nailis. I've come across 7 different spellings so far and I still have'nt found Andrews birth!

I've been trying to find my Kirkland lot on 1901 census for ages with no luck, had already tried Kirtland, Curtland etc. Had another go after reading this thread and found them under HIRKLAND!! Hi I was looking for my friend's Great Grandparents on the 1881 census without any joy, but thanks to one of the children having an unusual first name someone finally found them for me in Aston, Birmingham. Their surname was BOWEN but they were shown as HIGGINS!!!!!!!! Work that one out!! Ann

My Backhouse family mistranscribed as Backthrice Brickhouse and Backhurst.

i was looking for a bufree (very unusual first name ) whitaker, found her with help from boards here transcribed as BEANFRY WHITAKER,havent stopped laughing yet,

1901 census. William J Marsland indexed as William Jillarsland on PRO. No wonder I couldn't find them. Found eventually by doing a first name only search on the daughter (my grandmother). They are indexed correctly on Ancestry though. Janice

I think this is a good idea, not to criticise transcribers but to show examples of mistranscriptions. I could not find my grandmother, Maud Mary Barker on the 1901, no matter how I tried. I found my gt grandmother & youngest son Charles & printed the original image. When I looked closely at this I clearly found grandma further down the page. Printed the transcription & found her as Anna M Baker with her daughter correct as Maud M but Baker again. The clincher was her sister Nellie correctly named living with her, & a small note to say head away in South Africa. Really pleased with this so looked closer still & found grans eldest sister Inez Anne Osborne with her husband & two children transcribed as Iringar Osborne. I notified Ancestry of one bad error but they were not interested, kept trying to tell me that in 1861, HMS Victory was in Portsmouth Harbour, Northamptonshire. No amount of telling them that Northamptonshire is landlocked would register with them. Vivienne
