I quite like this site and every time I go down another branch on my tree and come across them being around in 1881 I put them on there so i have quite a few ancestors on there. I have had one contact whom I had previously communicated with so it is working but needs lots more people to put their rellies on there.

Thank you Barbara, I will think about that.

hi barbra i put my ancestors on 3 months ago but nothing has come back as a match as yet, i found them very helpful in doing look ups in the midlands for my postings so as it is free you have nothing to lose regards ray

Wendy, You could go to a site like Bigfoot . c o m and get another email address for free. All it does is forward messages sent to it to your own email but it works as a separate address for these sites that need a different one for each person. Just a thought, I use and it works quite well. Barbara

I think the whole point of this site is that it records FACTS, not conjecture. You put in what you can prove from the 1881 census. If you haven't got far enough back yet, then you need to wait until you have. I have put in all my ancestors and relatives by marriage that I have found in 1881--some are of course missing! A second cousin whom I found through this site [GR] also put her info on there, and we were immediately linked, so it does work. The more people who put on their family from the 1881 census, the more links there will be!! I just wish they would allow me to put on my husband's---you can only do that if you have a separate e-mail address to enter. Obviously, I cannot put his ancestors down as MY blood relatives--it doesn't work. Wendy

I just went straight in and wasn't referred by anyone. I think it may be useful for finding other descendants though, your third cousins etc.

My brother referred me today and Ive just entered my details - it matched me with my brother! I cant, at the moment, see that its going to do me much good. I know all my ancestors around 1881, I know what happened to everyone on the 1881 and unless there are some VERY big surprises in store, I don't have any missing rellies. However, you never know. It will only match your census details exactly, in other words, two different people need to enter the same census item, spelling mistakes and all, to get a match. If anyone wants in, I can refer you in free. If they do eventually make a charge, I doubt if I will suscribe - I can't see the point for me, but it may be useful for other people.

Julie Report 24 Nov 2004 16:39

At the moment you can't put them on unless they were around in 1881. I have put all of mine on, would be great if everyone did this as the more people that do, the more matches, which is useful for finding descendants rather than ancestors. I think it is all free until at least 1/1/05. Once you have entered all your ancestors/relatives, you can refer other relatives and share the relatives you have entered with them presumably saving them the work of entering them themselves.

Some of my family start from the 1901 census so how to you put these on???

Little Lost

Little Lost Report 8 Nov 2004 10:00

HI, I just joined lost cousins and was sceptical about how it works so I invited my 'cousin' to join and it did match us straight away so it does work. However thats fine while using the free 1881 census but once you have to start paying to get reference numbers from other census it wont take of so quick Gloria

Kathryn and Sandra I think it is asking for 1881 census details as these are the easiest to obtain from the familysearch site - and they're free. If you haven't already tried, go and see if you can find them and then you can enter the info on lost cousins. The piece, folio and page numbers will be on the page that contains your rellies household, just under the address Jeanette x

Why not upload your GEDCOM to GenCircles? It will provide you with 'SmartMarches' for a lot more then just cousins... but LOTS more people need to upload their trees. Sorry - haven't got the GenCircles web addess in front of me, but you just need to Google it...

They've added the facility to enter people from the Scottish 1881 census on lostcousins. Now if only I could find my Edwin Henry Butler born Leicester 1868 on the English 1881 I could enter him - but he's hiding!! In 1891 he's down as Edwyn Gerry Buker, and others members of the family are listed under Butter!! Haven't found any new cousins on lostcousins yet - but I guess as more people enter their rellies the chance of finding a link goes up............ here's hoping!! Maggie

Yes, the site has been updated since I put this on in the summer! I haven't got any connections yet, but you never know - I live in hopes. Barbara

Jean Report 31 Oct 2004 22:24

Half my lot seemed to be away in 1881, only half the family there on one side and can't find them anywhere!! Perhaps if I include their names a long lost cousin will find them? I have only been able to find connections on here to the female sides of the family.

No your email address won't be on show its just a convienient username that you won't forget. I have put all the rellies i can find on there so far from the 1881 census but I have not had any matches yet.

Jean

Jean Report 31 Oct 2004 21:47

Just had a look at this site. Does it mean that your e-mail address will be log-in, and does that mean it will be on show to all? Just a bit puzzled Jean

Hi, I looked at this site after some info found in Your Family Tree magazine and it looks like a good idea. You enter information about your relations from the 1881 census and if anyone matches up you are notified automatically. I think the site has been updated since this orignal posting. Only problem is if your ancesters are "missing" or hiding on the 1881 census you're stuck. Cleo
