Hi Mike! Big favour?? (again!) Please could you look up the name Langham on your 1861? I am trying to trace the father of Emma, b.1858/9 in Hinckley, husband of Eliza(beth?), b.1832/3 in Hinckley. He is not on the 1881, and am stuck! Have traced a marriage, and think he may be named George, but want to check if I am right or wrong. I believe they would be in Hinckley, none of my lot moved far! Greeting’s & Welcome Alfred. . . . I can confirm that the Marriage did take place At Skeffington on 20th. Nov. 1856. And according to my marriage disks I have The Father’s names were William in both cases.. . So to try and answer your question as to why no Fathers names ?. . . . From the Parish Records for Marriages I’ve seen of that age.(1856) There were no provisions to put the Father’s names on the certificate just the people who were married plus the Vicar And Witness. . . Or another reason could be that the certificate was written out Several days in advance by some one who could write. . . And the Fathers details were not to hand at the time So the Fathers names would be added on the day ? But forgot. And maybe both Daniel & Anne couldn’t read or write and made their mark so would not see that the names had not been added. Both parents didn’t approve of the Wedding ? And so it was by Licence. . . So was the William Jordon ( Witness ) a Brother to Daniel ? Hope this helps. . . MIKE.

Leicester Census as :- Boarding with :- GR12/2533 /140 /Page 14. 20,Wand Street Leicester. John Green. Mar. 31. Needle Maker. Sarah. Wife. 24. Roland. Son. 2. Amelia. Dau. 3 Months. JOHN WITTERING. Boarder. 21. Shoe Finisher. All Born in the City of Leicester. (St. Margaret’s ) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The only likely BIRTH coming up on the 1837 site was :- December Quarter. 1869. JOHN WITTERING. Leicester. Certificate No. :- 7a. 196. This is a long shot for Parents Names. . . .but a possibility ? St. Margaret’s Church Marriages. . . . Entry No.310, SEP 2, 1866, after Banns THOMAS WITTERING, 19, bach. CORDWAINER, of QUEEN St, s. of JOHN WITTERING, FWK AMELIA OLDERSHAW, 18, sp. of RODNEY St, d. of JOHN OLDERSHAW, FWK Wits: SAMUEL PORTER?, ANN WITTERING. Looks like Amelia died due to childbirth :- Welford Road Wittering Burials:- WITTERING AMELIA 12 AUG 1889 41 Un Consecrated Ground WITTERING ANNIE 12 AUG 1889 13DAYS U = Ditto. The Centre is in the centre of the Village close to the main Shopping Area.(Bell Street) It is in fact an Old School Building set behind iron railings with a Bus Stop right out side the front gateway.. .Opposite Paddock Street. Coming from the Mini roundabout at the junction of Aylestone Lane / Leicester Rd. / Long Street. Turn RIGHT. . . . You’ll pass the Centre on your right The Car Park is 100 yds further on your right just after the British Legion HQ. ( Don’t turn into their Car Park ) If you turn the next RIGHT into the road called :- Elizabeth Court. ( opposite the “ Peace Gardens” with a floral flowerbed) Then sharp right into the Car Park. It’s a small car Park so don’t leave it too late to get there. And I should avoid Tuesdays as the Family History Society is closed that day and it gets full up quickly. If you wish you can pre-book a fiche reader. You will have to sign up for a “ Readers Ticket “ ( it lasts 3 years and free.) But you DO NEED some type of IDENTITY with you. There are lockers for your personal belongings. And as said you can only take pencils and note pads into the reading room. If you require help then go to the desk in the second room and ask, they are only pleased to help you. They hold all types of Archives there. . . . from Parish Records to Local New’s papers on film. The following info is from the county council website given below: The Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland, Long Street, Wigston Magna, Leicester, LE18 2AH Telephone: 0116 2571080 The Record Office is the centre for research into the history of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. Records of all kinds, including manuscripts (the archives of local government, institutions and families), maps and photographs are preserved and made available for research by the public. The record office also houses the local studies collection, including general works on Leicestershire and Rutland, local newspapers and periodicals, writings of local authors and sound recordings. http://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/record_office I've only been once. You can't take pens in with you or bags, but you can take pencils and paper. It will have the full GRO index and also parish registers - not sure if they have absolutely all. They have a small car park but there are also a couple of large carparks near the shops. It's not too far to walk. You really need to know exactly what you want to look up before you go. Jan

Hi Bev, I go to the record office in Lincoln I find looking at the fiche for the parish reg for births marriage's and deaths, very interesting also Lincoln has the Kelly's direstory's don't know about Wigston. I think you have to book a fiche reader, take a cardigan as you find they are sometimes cold, you may have to take a couple of photo's of yourself, you do for Lincoln. Good luck they will help you in there if you just ask them, I know Lincoln are very helpful. Regards Sue.........

Hello Mike,you have been very busy on my behalf,Williams age fits,I know nothing about him,but my Gt,gran,Catherine nee Dean aged 30,was living at her Mothers home with children Margaret aged 4 and Ada aged 2 on 1871 census[no mention of William].A death in 1871,of Wm Derry,has now to be verified.Records helpers found this info for me on Friday and---- .I wonder if I have found a skeleton in the closet,was my Catherine married to my Grans father? Will get back to you ,in the meantime many thanks,
